As we wind down
our celebration of
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday,
I center in his teachings
on the power of love.
Love is the center of
the beloved community.
But Dr. King teaches us
that there is power in love.

King said
“Love is the only force
capable of transforming
an enemy into friend.”

Dr. King is saying
that Love is not a weakness
but a strength
that enhances our capabilities,
relationships, and achievements.

As Samahria Lyte Kaufman
says
“the one who loves
the most
wins.”

Dr. King said
don’t allow anyone
to pull you
so low
as to hate them.

In his book Fidelity,
Thich Nhat Hanh says
“[i]n true love,
you don’t exclude anyone. . . .
Loving one person
is an opportunity to love everyone.
The deepest gift mindfulness
can bring is the wisdom
of nondiscrimination.”
